As we enter into September, we are getting a preview of the change of seasons. The overnight temperatures have dropped, the grasses are changing to gold, and an
occasional brisk wind from the north is giving us a preview of what’s to come. Even the quality of light has that Autumn feel to it. Cross our fingers, we still have Indian Summer ahead of us.
Jackson Lake is still at 82% of full pond with consistent flows from the dam at 1470cfs. Palisades Reservoir is at 56% of full pond with releases at the dam at 8850cfs.
Claassenia are making a good showing on the Snake River, and PMD’s still continue to have strong hatches. Hecuba’s and Mahogany Duns are beginning to make an appearance and will only get stronger when more inclimate weather arrives. Soon it will be time to bring out the baetis and streamer patterns. Don’t put away your terrestrial box just yet. On the warmer days ahead, the fish are still looking for hoppers, beetles and ants. The Snake and its tributaries (Hoback, Gros Ventre and Buffalo Fork) continue to fish very well with good flows and water temps.
Flat Creek has been blessed all season with high water flows and a consistent 56˚ water temp. PMD’s, grey drakes, callibaetis and tricos continue to be the “star” hatches as of late. Caddis activity has been spotty. Don’t neglect your terrestrial box when out on the Creek.
There is still a lot of excellent fishing to be had. So get out there and enjoy the great outdoors. Before you know it, you will be tuning your skis and boards for that next season to come. Be sure to stop by the shop for the latest intel on our area waters.
