We Are In Full Run-Off

Well, Jackson Hole rivers and streams are finally in full run-off... and flows will continue to rise with 80 degree temperatures predicted for this weekend. The current release from the Jackson Lake Dam is 3040cfs.

About the only locally moving water - streams & rivers - that is fishable is the top section of the Snake River, from below the Jackson Lake Dam downstream to Pacific Creek. Jackson Lake will filter out the sediment, and this section will remain clear and fishable. There hasn't been much dryfly fishing there yet, but nymphing and streamer fishing has been good.

Though local river fishing is limited, this is some of the best time of year for lake fishing in the area. It hasn't been that long since the ice has come off the lakes, so the fish are relatively high in the water column and still relatively close to the shoreline. Leech patterns, Wooly Buggers (Mohair, Marabou, and Balanced), and sparsely dressed streamers can be the ticket. If you're targeting Lake Trout (Mackinaw), try brightly colored patterns. Chartreuse and streamers with flash can be particularly good.

It is shaping up to be a very normal year with run-off, so it will be awhile for area streams and rivers to clear and start to fish. But we are blessed with many rivers all the way around us that are fishing well. For up-to-the-minute info about where to fish, don't hesitate to call the shop at (307) 733-3270.

Until next time, good fishing
