For the last several weeks Jackson Hole has been experiencing consistent weather and steady stream flows; currently at 1400cfs. And, as usual with those two factors, the Snake River has been producing consistently good fishing.
Large attractor dryflies (what the Snake River in the Jackson Valley is famous for!) have been the go-to’s in the middle of the day. Waterwalkers and Circus Peanuts have become standards here. Speaking of standards, I know of one fisherman that recently had a bang-up day on the old Yellow Double Humpy. One fly that has been standing out this year has been the Purple Royal Chubby. For no particular reason that I can think of, but it has been a steady producer. Hoppers are still in vogue. In the late afternoon/early evening start thinking of up-right wing patterns, such as Parachute Adams, Purple Haze, Para Wulffs, or Ausable Wulffs.
As we have previously mentioned, the Snake’s tributaries are down to fall flows, so look for water that has some depth... let’s say 3-4 feet, green water. And as we have also mentioned, it might not be a big area, but fish it. That is where the fish will be holding. As for flies; patterns that I have suggested above should work fine for you, but you might want to drop down in size.
All in all it has been a very good fishing year for Jackson Hole’s rivers and streams. As we progress further into fall expect the up-right wing patterns to become more important. And as usual, for up-to-the minute fishing info don’t hesitate to call us (307 733-3270) here at the shop.
Until next time, good fishing
Howard Cole
